Maths curriculum at Richard Cloudesley School

At Richard Cloudesley School, our mathematics curriculum is designed to support every pupil in developing essential skills for understanding and engaging with the world around them. We believe that mathematics goes beyond numbers, aiming to foster curiosity, confidence, and independence through meaningful learning experiences. Our approach ensures that each child receives the support and challenge they need to make progress at every stage of their educational journey.

Progression in Maths

Our mathematics curriculum follows a clear progression pathway, tailored to individual starting points and learning needs. Pupils begin with a strong foundation, focusing on making comparisons, identifying differences, and exploring relationships. As they move through the curriculum, they have opportunities to develop their understanding through engaging, practical activities and may gradually extend their skills to more complex concepts.

We provide three key curriculum tiers:

  • Firm Foundation Tier: Pupils working within this stage build their early mathematical understanding through activities that develop awareness, exploration, control, and recognition of sequence and pattern. There is a strong emphasis on practical experiences and repetition to support secure learning.
  • Building On Tier: Pupils working within this tier begin to develop skills in number recognition and counting, calculation, geometry, and measurement. They also have opportunities to develop their problem-solving abilities through matching, sorting, and recognising patterns, ensuring a broad grasp of key mathematical ideas.
  • Reaching Higher Tier: Pupils working within this tier may begin working towards number operations, money skills, interpreting data, and understanding properties of shapes.
  • Where appropriate, students have opportunities for inclusion sessions with mainstream peers to deepen their knowledge and confidence.

Key stage 4 and post 16 opportunities - ASDAN

From Key Stage 4 onwards, students undertake ASDAN modules in mathematics, offering practical, real-world learning experiences that further enhance their understanding. These modules are designed to broaden each pupil’s horizons, equipping them with the mathematical skills and confidence needed for life beyond Richard Cloudesley school.

Learning resources
To support progress and engagement, we make use of a range of high-quality resources:

  • White Rose Maths: Providing online activities linked t reaching higher units.
  • Mathletics: An engaging online platform, Mathletics allows pupils to practise and consolidate their mathematical skills at their own pace.
  • Help Kidz learn: online activities supporting pupils with sequencing, control and cause and effect
  • Numicon: For our younger learners and those who benefit from practical resources, Numicon offers multi-sensory, hands-on experiences that help embed key concepts and develop a deep understanding of maths
