At Richard Cloudesley School, we do not have a formal uniform. Our pupils have a wide range of physical, sensory, communication and medical needs, so it is important that what they wear supports their comfort, wellbeing and independence throughout the school day.
Comfortable and Sensory‑Friendly Clothing
Many pupils experience sensitivities to certain materials or textures. To help them feel comfortable and ready to learn, we recommend:
• Soft, stretchy fabrics
• Clothing without labels or with labels removed
• Loose‑fitting tops and bottoms
• Sensory‑friendly options (e.g., seamless socks, elastic‑waist trousers)
Easy‑to‑Manage Clothing
To promote independence and reduce frustration, clothing should be simple to put on and take off. We suggest:
• Elasticated waistbands
• Velcro fastenings instead of buttons
• Slip‑on or Velcro shoes
• Simple layers that can be added or removed easily
Appropriate for Medical and Physical Needs
Many pupils use wheelchairs, standing frames, walking frames or specialist seating. Clothing should:
• Be flexible and comfortable for different positions
• Avoid bulky seams or fastenings that may cause pressure
• Allow easy access for physiotherapy, medical routines or personal care
Practical for School Activities
Our curriculum includes sensory play, movement, outdoor learning and creative activities. Please ensure your child has:
• Clothing that can get messy
• A warm coat, hat and gloves in colder weather
• Spare clothing in their bag every day
Footwear
Pupils benefit most from:
• Supportive, secure shoes
• Velcro or slip‑on styles
• Footwear appropriate for physiotherapy activities and walking practice
We understand that some pupils may require specialist shoes or may not tolerate particular types of footwear - this is absolutely fine, and our team will work with families where needed.
Spare Clothing
Please send a spare set of comfortable clothes each day. This helps us support pupils who may need a change due to spills, sensory discomfort or personal‑care routines.
