Work Skills

From Year 9 onwards pupils have work skills lessons to support their understanding of the wider world and their place in it. Using their personal abilities as a starting point we teach them to develop their independence and their knowledge of the realistic opportunities that exist for them. We help them to make choices about their future ambitions. This includes taking them to visit all local colleges and sometimes residential colleges. Life skills is an important part of this lesson and we work with the OTs in school on skills such as washing clothes, personal hygiene routines and travel. Where appropriate we also teach the young people about benefits and their rights and responsibilities. Some 6th formers have Action for Kids come to school for work experience, whilst other learners might go out for work based placements with local companies in the Summer term.
