What our service does
Our aim is to raise the achievement and life outcomes for visually impaired children and young people.
We provide information, advice and support regarding all aspects of visual impairment. Support for schools includes access to the curriculum, books and materials, helpful technology, getting around safely (habilitation), self-help skills, adapting the environment and social and emotional wellbeing.
We work closely with children and young people, their families/carers, staff in educational settings and other key professionals in the NHS and Social Care.
The level of support we offer ranges depending on the needs of the child or young person.
We offer visual awareness training to school staff and training in relation to the needs of individual pupils. We also offer peer awareness training in schools.
We encourage families and carers to attend activities and events where children and young people have opportunities to meet others with sight loss.
Who our service provides for
We provide support for children and young people from birth either in their home, school or setting.
We support children and young people whose visual difficulties cannot be corrected by glasses.
Any child or young person who has been registered as Sight Impaired or Severely Sight Impaired will be supported by our service.
How a child or young person can access the service
Most referrals are made by eye hospitals/departments, schools, settings and other professionals.
What is Habilitation training?
Habilitation training is one-to-one training for children and young people with a vision impairment. Training begins with existing skills and then aims to develop the child’s personal mobility, navigation and independent living skills.

The aim of habilitation training is to ensure all who work with or support the child or young person with a visual impairment are provided with the correct information, guidance and support necessary to enable them to take an active role.
